Songs That Get Me By

Songs have a way of taking you to a different world. Old songs can instantly take you right back to a fond (or not so fond) memory of yours. They can inspire your outlook, they can break your heart with lyrics, and they can put you in better moods.

I've found in my journey that certain songs speak to me. I remember when me and R broke up for the first time, we were moving out of our apartment and this song literally spoke to me. Threw words at me and I was forced to listen to every breath she sang. I believe this song got me through tough times. And it's so unbelievably true. I listen to it now and get images of me laying in my huge bed in my new apartment with boxes unpacked and writing in my journal. Tears every time I had to go to sleep because I had to lay in bed alone, in an empty house, wake up the next day alone again, and get ready by myself, and leave for work and forced to smile all day at work then come back home to an empty house. I would walk in the door and say honey I'm home and go back to laying in bed until it started all over again.
This song takes me to that place.

Then there is this song. Medina. This song is current for me. It's last weekend. It's in the car to the bar. It takes me to the dance floor with my girlfriends and too many screwdrivers. Sweaty feet because my wedge booties have no peep-toe for my toes to breathe. It takes me to the words I am alright. I sing that part loud. I am alright. This is my coming out song. My going out song. My song that I listen to getting ready, having butterfly's because this is not my comfort zone, because my security blanket is not with me, and is no longer with me...but this is my I am alright song. Lyrics here.

I hear this song for the first time driving home from work today. Sometimes I search for his car to be driving past me as his gym is in my area, and my work is in his area. Then this song came on the radio and I wanted to pull over and listen to her sing. It was like she was singing my life in a song. Lyrics here. I teared up. It was my situation. It was my past...catching breathe in a web of lies, I've spent most of my life riding waves, playing acrobat, shadowboxing the other half, learning how to react. And its my  future, its me right now, its what I think about daily, its this lyric right here: I'll spend the rest of my time laughing hard with the windows down, leaving footprints all over town, keeping faith, karma comes around.
Here is the video.  This song will hold a place in my heart. It will take me back to where I am right now. Confused, hurt, but moving forward. Confident. That's where I'm at today. This song is where I am at today.
